In the first chapter of the book entitled "Sons and Lovers" we first met the Morel's family which consists of Mrs. Morel (31 years- pregnant with her third child which she never wanted), Mr. Morel (36 years), William (7 years) and Annie (5 years). The starts out by giving a physical description of the "Bottoms" , the Miners which is the neighborhood where the Morels family resides.
The action move forwards when William had just returned home (midday) for dinner so that he could make it backtime for the second half of the wake which is a holiday festival. However, William had to leave during dinner at the sound of the merry-go-round and the horn which indicates the beginning of the wake. In the afternoon, Mrs. Morel and Annie joined William at the wake when William gave her two-egg cups as a gift that he had won. After hanging out with William Mrs. Morel decided to leave while William decided that to stay a little bit longer. However, William felt sad after his mother departure.
Later that night, while the kids were asleep, Mrs. Morel awaited for her husband who had left for work earlier that day. Mrs. Morel became unhappy as she started to reflect on her present condition.
Moreover, Mrs.Morel also reflected on her past relationships including the Christmas she met her husband Walter at a Christmas Party. She fell in love with Walter immediately because he was different from the other guys, the fact that he was handsome and more importantly he reminded her of her father. Furthermore, the following Christmas they got married and she started to have kids. At that point she was very happy.
Unfortunately, that happiness did not last that very long for various reasons. One of the reason why Mrs.Morel started to despise her husband was the fact that he lied to her about paying bills for the furniture and the fact that the house that they lived in belong to his mother. Mrs. Morel also dislike her husband because he drink a lot and waste his money But most importantly her hatred developed even more when he shaved William hair while she was asleep.
At one point in time, Mr. Morel and Mrs. Morel got into a huge fight after Mr. Morels returned home drunk after his trip with his friend that Mrs. Morel dislike a lot. After their heated argument Mrs. Morel was left outside in the cold by Mr. Morel. However, Mrs. Morel went back inside after several attempts at waking Mr. Morel.
