Paul's Relationship Between Women

In the book entitled "Lovers and Sons" the author David Herbert Lawrence shows how the relationship between the main character Paul and Mrs. Morel succeeds while his relationship with girlfriend Miriam fails. Therefore, this essay will be critically analyzing the reasons why Paul's relationship between these women succeeds while another fails.

Paul Morel's imprisoning relationship with his mother trumps all his other relationships.  In the very beginning of the book it is evident that Mrs. Morel substitutes attachment for her sons for the broken connection with her husband, and what results is her certain domination over Paul in particular. In addition, the relationship between Paul and Mrs. Morel prevails because Mrs. Morel turn away from her husband immediately after Paul was born and from ever since then all her focus was on her children especially Paul as well as her love for flower. Due to the fact that all her attention was on Paul they spent most of the time together doing things like baking, shopping, dinning out together, reasoning together and so on.As a result, this gives their relationship time to bloom.

Furthermore, Paul's relationship was able to succeed because Mrs. Morel would always offer good advice to Paul about life which was in  fact normal among any mother and son relationship. For example, she was the one that persuaded Paul to look for a job in the newspaper the same way she did with her first son William. She never wanted Paul to work in the mine as her husband did because she was very optimistic about Paul's future. Also she was the one that accompanied Paul to an interview to a job that he applied for. Mrs. Morel also lied to the interviewer when Paul could not read the writing in french that the interviewer asked him. This was to show the lengths that Mrs. Morel was willing to go to to express her love and dedication towards her son.
On the other hand the relationship between Paul and Miriam failed because of Mrs. Morel jealous towards Miriam. Mrs. Morel  loathes Paul's relationship between Miriam from the very start, understanding that the girl's deep love of her son will over power her. For instance, Mrs. Morel says "She's not like an ordinary woman, who can leave me my share in him. She wants to absorb him." Meanwhile, Paul plays his part with equal fervor, incapable of committing himself in either direction. Furthermore, Paul hate Miriam, and feel so cruel towards her, at the thought of his mother. He also hate Miriam if she had caused his mother suffering. Soon there after he even confesses to his mother: "I really don't love her. I talk to her, but I want to come home to you." One of the reasons why Mrs. Morel despise Miriam so much was due to the fact that she feels as if Miriam is stealing away her son. The reason for this been the fact that the spend a lot of time together. For an example, Paul would help Miriam with her algebra and sometimes when William return it was dark.

In conclusion the relationship between Paul and Mrs. Morel succeeds because of their mother and son bond and the fact that Mrs. Morel dedicate her life looking after her son while rejecting her husband during the process. On the other hand, Paul's relationship between Miriam fails because Mrs. Morel was jealous of Paul's relationship with Miriam.

Summary: Chapter 1- The Early Married Life of the Morels

In the first chapter of the book entitled "Sons and Lovers" we first met the Morel's family which consists of Mrs. Morel (31 years- pregnant with her third child which she never wanted), Mr. Morel (36 years), William (7 years) and Annie (5 years). The starts out by giving a physical description of the "Bottoms" , the Miners which is the neighborhood where the Morels family resides.

The action move forwards when William had just returned home (midday) for dinner so that he could make it backtime for the second half of the wake which is a holiday festival. However, William had to leave during dinner at the sound of the merry-go-round and the horn which indicates the beginning of the wake. In the afternoon, Mrs. Morel and Annie joined William at the wake when William gave her two-egg cups as a gift that he had won. After hanging out with William Mrs. Morel decided to leave while William decided that to stay a little bit longer. However, William felt sad after his mother departure.
Later that night, while the kids were asleep, Mrs. Morel awaited for her husband who had left for work earlier that day. Mrs. Morel became unhappy as she started to reflect on her present condition.

Moreover, Mrs.Morel also reflected on her past relationships including the Christmas she met her husband Walter at a Christmas Party. She fell in love with Walter immediately because he was different from the other guys, the fact that he was handsome and more importantly he reminded her of her father. Furthermore, the following Christmas they got married and she started to have kids. At that point she was very happy.

Unfortunately, that happiness did not last that very long for various reasons. One of the reason why Mrs.Morel started to despise her husband was the fact that he lied to her about paying bills for the furniture and the fact that the house that they lived in belong to his mother. Mrs. Morel also dislike her husband because he drink a lot and waste his money But most importantly her hatred developed even more when he shaved William hair while she was asleep.

At one point in time, Mr. Morel and Mrs. Morel got into a huge fight after Mr. Morels returned home drunk after his trip with his friend that Mrs. Morel dislike a lot. After their heated argument Mrs. Morel was left outside in the cold by Mr. Morel. However, Mrs. Morel went back inside after several attempts at waking Mr. Morel.

According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the term betrayal (or backstabbing) refers to is the breaking or violation of a presumptive contract, trust,or confidence that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals, between organizations or between individuals and organizations.
For an illustration, I felt betrayed when a very close family member of mine told a serious lie on me that I said something that was not true. It felt has if someone reached into my chest and ripped my heart right out. It hurts even more when it's family. However, I then confronted the person as to find out the reason for doing such evil deed.
At least one point in our lives we all have felt betrayed by someone but have totally misunderstood the whole situation. Well as for me I surely did, when I thought that my friend betrayed me by leaving a package for me behind after she told me that she would carry it along with her. I felt so bad and disappointed with her of thinking that she could do such horrible thing to someone that she called her 'FRIEND'. But I found out later that I had totally misunderstood the situation because when I thought that she had all ready left but the fact that she had been late due to certain circumstance. I felt so bad after the whole situation because at first deep down I knew that she would have never done something like that to me in a million years to come. Thus, one must be totally sure about something before jumping to wrong conclusions.

In the play entitled "Much Ado About Nothing" by William Shakespeare the characters seemed to be tricky or evil because of the their personal role in the play. For instance, Don John the bastard brother of Don Pedro was evil because his brother was the Prince of Aarogan while he was a servant to his brother. In other words he had to take orders from his brother which made him inferior to his brother. As a result, he wanted revenge on his brother and Claudio by playing tricks and evil plans because he was treated like no body.

Winter's Tale

"Winter's Tale" is based on a royal family that suffered a tragic lost as a result of a member of the family tragedy but had been reconciled at the end of the text which results in an happily ever after. On the other hand, in England around the same time that the book has written England had long gone a time without a full royal family. Although Elizabeth was the queen prior that time (1603) she was unwed and had no children that one could be symbolic to a common English family. However, England adored and worshiped her because she was a majestic virgin queen. As a result, this event had influenced Shakespeare to write the play "Winter's Tale."

The Elizabethan Threatre

Elizabethan theatre is a general term covering the plays written and performed publicly in England during the reign (1558 - 1603) of Queen Elizabeth I. The term can be used more broadly to also include theatre of Elizabeth's immediate successors, James I and Charles I, until the closure of public theaters in 1642, with the onset of the Civil War.

History

Elizabethan theater derived from several sources. A crucial source was the mystery plays that were part of religious festivals in England and other parts of Europe during the Middle Ages. The mystery plays were complex retellings of legends based on biblical themes, originally performed in churches but later becoming more linked to the secular celebrations that grew up around religious festivals. Other sources include the morality plays that evolved out of the mysteries, the "University drama" that attempted to recreate Greek tragedy. Later, in the 17th century, the Commedia dell'arte and the elaborate masques frequently presented at court came to play roles in the shaping of public theater.

Temporary companies of players attached to households of leading noblemen and performing seasonally in various locations existed before the reign of Elizabeth I. These became the foundation for the professional players that performed on the Elizabethan stage. The tours of these players gradually replaced the performances or the mystery and morality plays by local players, and a 1572 law eliminated the remaining companies lacking formal patronage by labelling them as vagabonds. At court as well, the performance of masques by courtiers and other amateurs, apparently common in the early years of Elizabeth, was replaced by the professional companies with noble patrons, who grew in number and quality during her reign.

The Theater of the Absurd

The Theater of the Absurd according to Wikipedia refers to  is a theatrical style originating in France in the late 1940's. It relies heavily on existential philosophy, and is a category for plays of absurdist fiction, written by a number of playwrights from the late 1940s to the 1960s, as well as the theatre which has evolved from their work. It expresses the belief that, in a godless universe, human existence has no meaning or purpose and therefore all communication breaks down. Logical construction and argument give way to irrational and illogical speech and as its ultimate conclusion, silence.
